Imagine your mind as a gearbox with three positions.
First Gear—The Negative Mind.
Thoughts of fear, worry, doubt, and limitation.
Neutral Gear—The Still Mind.
No mental struggle. No positive or negative thinking. Simple stillness.
Second Gear—The Positive Mind.
Thoughts of confidence, possibility, gratitude, and optimism.
Now notice something interesting.
We spend much of our lives shifting between first and second gear.
From negative thinking to positive thinking.
From fear to hope.
From doubt to confidence.
And then, before we know it, back again.
Yet in all this endless shifting, we overlook something extraordinary: the neutral gear of stillness that lies between them.
And perhaps that is where the real discovery begins.
The Exercise—Resting in Neutral
1. Become Still.
Close your eyes or keep them open. Relax your body. Take one slow, deep breath.
2. Notice the Gear You’re In.
Observe your thoughts without judging them.
Are they negative or positive? It doesn’t matter.
3. Shift Into Neutral.
For a moment, stop trying to replace one thought with another.
Withdraw your attention from the flow of thought.
Allow thoughts to come and go without following them.
4. Rest in the Stillness.
No need to think positively.
No need to fight negative thoughts.
Simply be still . . . aware of being aware.
If another thought appears, notice it and gently return your attention to the quiet presence beneath it.
Remain here for a few moments.
The Discovery
You do not always need to shift from negative to positive thinking.
Sometimes the greatest shift is stepping out of the mental gearbox altogether.
First gear changes the way you suffer.
Second gear changes the way you think.
Neutral allows you to discover the awareness that observes both.
And here is the beautiful part, old friend.
You are not the gears.
You are the one who notices their shift.
Before you rehearse a new life in the mind, discover the stillness from which conscious rehearsal can begin.
Shift into neutral. Rest in awareness. Then consciously choose your direction.
